Write to Congress: Please support strong federal research funding.

Congress is making critical decisions about federal research funding for FY 2027.

The President’s FY27 budget request proposed deep cuts to federal research, and several House spending bills recommended by the House Appropriations Committee also include sharp cuts to key research agencies and programs.

Those reductions would come at a time when the United States faces growing competition for global leadership in science and technology.

Congress has not yet finalized FY27 funding decisions. When lawmakers return to Washington after the August recess, they will have an opportunity to reject harmful cuts and support the investments that drive discovery, innovation, workforce development, and economic growth.

Members of Congress need to hear from constituents who believe continued U.S. leadership in scientific discovery matters.

At the University of Oregon, federal funding advances research on earthquakes, tsunamis, and the Cascadia Subduction Zone and helps maintain the seismic stations that power the West Coast ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system. It also supports research in areas such as the life sciences, youth mental health and student success, and advanced materials and technologies relevant to semiconductors, health care, and quantum science.
